Great Grey Owl

Normally a resident of forests far north of the Canada' southernmost town, Kingsville, Ontario, this owl showed up shortly before Christmas 2011. It is about 2 feet tall with a wing span of about 5 feet. I had the opportunity to go to Kingsville on January 2, 2012.

Canadian Southern Railway Station

Originally build between 1871 and 1873, this building is in the midst of a major restoration. It was built as the Canadian Southern Railway station in St Thomas and the company's headquarters. The station is about 350 feet long but only 35 feet deep. Each of the two floors have ceiling heights of 16 feet. There is a basement and an attic that run the full length of the building. Currently the building has had about two thirds of the main floor refurbished with space for office administration and a public reception hall which is now booked for 24 months. Upstairs there is office space rented to lawyers, our MPP and numerous non-profit organizations. Lots is done but there is still many areas yet to complete.

The evening after I almost stepped on a rattlesnake. Boy, they can move fast! Thank goodness. I needed this evening serenity. The centre grouping of lights is where Charles and Anne, Gloria and Alex were staying.

An ornery little critter. You can see it in the eye.

Who says you should put down your camera after 10 am? This one was hand held (no image stabilizer) at about noon.

Spring Migration-Rondeau and Point Pelee

With such a late spring, compound that with a early visit to Rondeau Provincial Park and Point Pelee National Park, the variety of birds we saw was much lower than in previous years. However, we did get to see the birds fairly clearly as the leaves on the trees were barely out of bud.

Tundra Swan Spring Migration

Every March, thousands of tundra swans on their way to the high Arctic, stop to visit in Aylmer, ON. Their stay is usually short but that (like tax season) indicates summer should be coming along soon.

Parc Omega-Montebello Quebec

The last weekend of January 2011, Nancy & I spent a long weekend travelling to & from Montebello, QC. We were part of a bus tour. For two of the days, we travelled around in a school bus looking out onto snow covered trees and hills. There were a variety of deer, caribou, wild boar and bison. But the 36 of us were there to photograph Arctic and Timber wolves. The best show was with the Timber wolves who were "picking on" one lone female. Her snarling and gnashing of teeth did not scare off the pack. The white Arctic wolves did not disappoint either.

Now before you get too worried, the wolves and coyotes were in enclosures that ensured their safety as well as the safety of the other park animals.

Egypt February 2010

The following group of images were taken in Cairo, Luxor and numerous ancient temples.

Here in Ontario something's old if its 100 years old or more. There we were walking in temples that date back 4,000 years (or more).

The people were always saying "Welcome". Any scam is fair when doing any kind of business with tourists but outside of earning a pound, the Egyptians were honest and helpful. Need directions just ask - but be prepared to visit someone's sister's shop - this is business after all. The trick was to judge the business from the non-business. Tired from walking, pay your 40 cents and buy a cup of tea or coffee. You're welcome to sit for as long as you please.
